Moree: police attacked during riot

Police have allegedly been attacked with rocks and beer bottles while breaking up a riot in northwest NSW on New Year’s Day.

Police were called to Mehi Crescent, Moree at 2.50am (AEDT) after reports of an assault.

They arrived to find about 100 people on the road with several brawls occurring.

Officers with police dogs intervened to disperse the crowd and were forced to use tasers on two men who were allegedly involved in separate assaults.

It is alleged the crowd then turned on police and pelted them with bottles and rocks.

One officer was hit in the head with a rock and taken to Moree Hospital for treatment.

Another constable sustained minor injuries after being hit on the side of the head with a beer bottle.

The crowd eventually dispersed with two men and a woman, aged 18, 65 and 44, arrested at the scene.

The 18-year-old man and 44-year-old woman were charged with affray and granted bail. They are due to appear in Moree Local Court on February 27.

The 65-year-old man was charged with affray, behaving in an offensive manner and using offensive language in a public place.

He is to appear in Moree Local Court on February 28.
